House Number Sign
Title: Happy House Numbers
Year: 2024
Media: ceramic glaze on ceramic tiles; kiln-fired to cone 05
Size: 24" x 18" / twelve 6" x 6” tiles
Location: private
Description:
This commission is a house number sign for the front of my client's house.
My client recently remodeled their entry way, adding a large flower container for beautification at the entrance.
The container is yet to be filled, but the client wanted a picture that would complement the flower arrangements
in a happy, bright and playful way.
The most important aspect of a house number sign are of course the numbers. The picture above the numbers
has to draw attention but not overpower the numbers. The numbers have to be visible from far away so that in
an emergency situation the house can be found without any problems. The numbers are playful and organic but
still distinct and legible and not too dominant.
The tiles are adhered on a Schluter Kerdi Board substrate, prepared for outdoors, attached on the back is a
French cleat hanging system.
Sketches:
I had pretty much no restrictions regarding design, colors and motif at the beginning.
Right: dummy to determine tile size (either 6" x 6" or 8" x 8)" and number size
Narrowing down to 2 designs; color sketches and architecual rendering for sign placement
Test tiles:
I made 4 different tiles to test the background color and the colors for the flower and the line elements
To get as many combinations as possible, I divided the background into top and bottom, each with a different color and the flower into a right and left side with different colors and design. Each quarter is different.
Glazing:
(everything goes better with a good cup of coffee late)
Firing
Changes:
After seeing the colorful, vibrant and organic flowers together with the numbers, I decided to give my client
an option for the font for the numbers.
