Tile Jewelry

I make jewelry out of bisque tiles.

The pendants are glazed front and back, that makes them feel so smooth.

Generally, glazes need to be applied three times with drying times in between.

First, I will apply three layers of white glaze on the front, after drying three

layers on the back and finally the sides. Then I’ll smooth out irregularities and

bumps before I can apply my designs. At that time the glazes look very pastel like.

I am always trying to get a lot done, be it tiles and/or pendants to make good

use of my kiln load and firing. The firing at cone 05 (1888F) itself will take about

7.5 hours with about 10 hours plus for cooling off. Then the most exciting part

happens: kiln opening. It’s like birthday and Christmas at the same time!

The pure joy when the lid opens and all those beautiful bright and vibrant colors

are smiling at me.

Now I can apply gold luster on my designs. Gold luster has to have a fired glaze

underneath to make it shine. It contains real gold and the price for a small bottle

goes up and down with the market price of gold. Before firing it looks rather

brown or red. Then the object has to be fired again, at a lower temperature at

cone 018 (1319F).

Once all glazing and firing is done I have to smooth out the stilt marks on the back.

These are the little dots you can see on the back side of the pendants. If I don’t

use stilts for the firing process, my pendants would melt into my kiln shelves.

Last thing to do: glue on a 18K bail and place it in a gift box.
